Abstract: | The Toowoomba Region is a great place to live, work and visit, offering an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy a mix of city, town and rural lifestyles. The Toowoomba Regional Council is committed to supporting the future growth of our Region, while retaining diverse lifestyle options. The Toowoomba Region Sustainable Transport Strategy developed in 2023 has identified the social, economic and environmental travel needs of our community. The comprehensive plan for the future of Toowoomba’s transport intends to meet the needs of our community and visitors, while ensuring future development is sustainable. The Strategy has been developed to ensure we plan responsibly for the growth of our Region. Population forecasts indicate our Region could be home to a further 55,000 people over the next 30 years. By planning now for this future growth, we will ensure future generations enjoy all the lifestyle benefits that make the Region an attractive destination. This predicted population boom means that greater pressure will be placed on our transport infrastructure network, especially if the current trends of motor vehicle use continue their upward trajectory. To counter this, the use sustainable transport options, like active and public transport, are more important than ever. We recognise that not all travel modes will suit all tasks or residents within our diverse mix of communities and this highlights the importance of providing transport that is equitable, accessible and inclusive. A well-connected Region supports a well-connected community, with equal access to facilities and services for all residents. This document supports this vision of inclusivity with key strategies and actions. There are however, a vast number of short distance urban trips, currently made in private vehicles, could be substituted by active travel or public. For example, 95% of journey to work trips in the region are under 5km in length, meaning there is a huge opportunity for trip substitution to active modes. The document also explores the future development of our region as a major freight centre, facilitating goods and services though road, rail and air transport. Additionally, the region continues to excel as a key tourist attraction within South East Queensland, with visitors requiring reliable transport options to, from and within our Region. The Sustainable Transport Strategy will guide the Toowoomba Regional Council’s budgets, planning scheme, and work practices, to help balance the Region’s transport mode and infrastructure profile. Allowing us to develop a safe, inclusive and sustainable transport network. |
