Abstract: | Compaction compliance testing in Queensland is currently undertaken utilising testing technology from the 1930's and 1950's. It is labour intensive, slow, and can take several days to confirm compliance. It is performed utilising a statistical technique where a series of tests is undertaken at random points in an attempt to represent the Lot submitted. Intelligent compaction has the potential to provide compliance data for all points of the lot, in real time. For the contractor is has the potential to allow adjustment of roller patterns on the fly to best utilise equipment and personnel and identify problem areas. The objective of this paper will be to: • Discuss the NACOE research undertaken into the intelligent compaction technology, the current stage of the project, and what is planned for the future. • Outline the expected key benefits from implementation of intelligent compaction, including the systems that enable it. • Discuss the barriers to implementation of the technology on a construction project, and how TMR have dealt with those barriers. • Illustrate the power of implementing the technology, including improvements in construction processes, and expected strengthening of technical governance. |
