Up until previously, flood models were basically relatively largely unusable sets of data of which the value was not fully realised or maximised (i.e. just a link on a map). Synergy has been working with numerous Council's across QLD (Southern Downs, Gympie, Brisbane, Ipswich and Fraser Coast) in a mix of rural and urban strategic flood risk management plans (FRMP's). Our approach is unique and contemporary based on our understanding of local government needs across various areas such as land use planning, operations, disaster management, community awareness spaces and the environment. This presentation will demonstrate the new methods and outputs that are being produced for contemporary FRMP's in multiple spaces including the linking of these plans with flood operations planning, community led flood response and developing flood champions through community education and awareness. The presentation will also demonstrate effective electronic workspaces (showing flood risk interactively), the links and development of flood intelligence and forecasting systems as well as natural floodplain management outcomes and risk based land use planning frameworks. Practical solutions to flood planning, response and recovery considering limited resources is also a key component to new FRMP's. Overall, it is now a significant risk for Council's to be undertaking flood models in isolation of future flood risk management plans (particularly where consultants have no experience in this space). In addition aligning strategic direction and investment to flood models, FRMP's and beyond is essential due to the current structure of grant funding from NEMA and the QRA and to ensure successful applications. As a result of Council and Synergy's work (and the funding protocols and proactive support of the QRA), many Councils are now progressing past the FRMP stage and being funded for action based works (such as flood warning and forecasting systems, community action plans and flood operations plans)en_US
