Abstract: | Encapsulating the essence of Adventure, the Cassowary Coast region is bound by the wet tropics and Great Barrier Reef World Heritage areas featuring a vast array of natural features that offer up a local adventure for every day of the week. The Cardwell Mountain Biking project was to assess the feasibility of a World Class Ride Destination at Cardwell with Key aims to: - Boost the Cardwell and neighbouring regional economy through mountain bike tourism by constructing a World Class Mountain Bike trail network and becoming a Mountain Bike Destination - Re-invigorate the remainder of the tourism and services sectors - Generate investment and interest in the area which will raise property values and improve social wellbeing - Create now employment opportunities within Cardwell and the Cassowary Coast Area - Promote the regions unique cultural heritage - Youth focus in activities and opportunities - Elevate the Cassowary Coast region as a tourism destination by adding a new world class nature based adventure experience Cassowary Coast Regional Council took a new approach to project partnerships and utilised a consultation framework. A key priority aspect in this consultation process has been the engagement with Girramay Traditional Owners from the beginning and working with the Girramay Elders, Board, and community on the process and progress. Another recognised element of success in this project has been the Cardwell community lead in establishing the momentum and interest within their community in advance of council involvement. The project was led by a project control group that included Traditional Owners – Girramay Elders/Girringun RNTBC, Members and Rangers, Community, Business, QPWS, Wet Tropic Management Authority, HQ Plantations, Queensland State Government bodies including Department of Innovation and Tourism Industry Development. There are six (6) critical elements of a Ride Destination - Connectivity - Quality Trails - Progressive Expansion - Natural Features - Pubs and Accommodation - World class Events |
