Abstract: IPWEA Australasia arranged and lead a Study Tour Delegation to the Smart City Expo World Congress Barcelona in November 2018. This was in conjunction with SCCANZ, ASCA, and Austrade. I was fortunate to be awarded a scholarship from the IPWEA Queensland Foundation to take part in the study tour. Herein this report outlines my objectives in attending, an account of the tour, discussion of key learnings and recommendations which members of IPWEAQ, IPWEA Group and the wider public engineering community can consider for enabling smart futures within their authority area.

Abstract: This paper will present an outline of the IPWEA’s World Study Tour 2008 and provide useful links for obtaining more detailed information. One commonality discovered during the tour was that although our priorities may alter from City to City, local governments are passionate about driving change through strong leadership and are willing to share this knowledge if asked.2009-01-01T00:00:00ZInternational Overseas Study Tour 2016 Report: The United States, Spain and the Netherlands by Andrew RyanRyan, Andrewhttps://ipweaq.intersearch.com.au/ipweaqjspui/handle/1/34642018-02-15T00:45:43Z2016-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: International Overseas Study Tour 2016 Report: The United States, Spain and the Netherlands by Andrew Ryan

Abstract: A group of four Australian local government and public works engineers including myself visited North America and Europe in August / September 2016. During the tour we visited the cities of Los Angeles, then on to Minneapolis in the State of Minnesota for the APWA Public Works Exhibition and Conference, then to New York and across to Madrid, Spain, and Amsterdam in The Netherlands before returning to Australia, and met with many councils and fellow professional engineers.
The theme of the study tour was “Sustainable Practices and Innovation in Public Works”. Participants were interested in meeting with local government managers and public works practitioners to hear of their experiences, innovations and lessons learnt.

Abstract: Each year the IPWEA Foundation offers its members an opportunity to
participate in a sponsored study tour. It is a chance to visit local government
authorities in different countries, meet fellow engineering professionals, see
engineering projects and do some sightseeing. In order to be considered for
the scholarship, members are required to submit an application addressing
several criteria, outline their areas of interest and explain why they should be
considered. After a formal selection process is completed, a small group of
members are selected and the tour is organised, the itinerary of which is
tailored to suit the interests of the group.
The 2016 tour was themed “Best Practice and Innovation in Public Works”
and included visits to local authorities in Santa Monica, California, the City of
Yonkers near New York, City of Madrid and Valladolid in Spain, and various
places in Netherlands. As part of the tour, participants attended the annual
American Public Works Exhibition (PWX) in Minneapolis - a four day
professional development conference and trade show - which attracts
attendees from not only North America but also from other countries including
Australia, Mexico and Europe.
